There was a point about 8 years ago where I did a 180. I stopped baking with white sugar, bleached flours, and food dyes and instead I started experimenting with honey, buckwheat flour, and beet powder.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
This wasn’t because I went through a gluten-free period or some sort of cleanse – it was because I started doing research into the ingredients I was using to make the cakes and cookies that I fed to my loved ones.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
What I didn’t know at the beginning was how many commercial baking ingredients were so highly refined and processed. It’s when I started delving deeper into the manufacturing around these ingredients that I decided I needed to make a change.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
👉🏻 Today I'm dishing the dirt on the flour refinement + bleaching process so you can make informed buying decisions that are right for you.⁠⠀

You know that I don’t make ice cream often, but when I’m going to the effort of making homemade ice cream, I want it to be worth my time.⁠⠀

And friend, this one is sooo worth the time it takes to make (and to say its name 😅)!⁠⠀

I’m not normally a massive fan of chocolate ice cream. I’m always drawn to coffee, citrus, cookie dough, or pistachio flavours over chocolate. But sometimes, you just need a big ol’ bowl of chocolate peanut butter indulgence, amiright?⁠⠀

This #refinedsugarfree ice cream is so creamy, super chocolatey and STUFFED with gluten-free peanut butter cookie dough bites!⁠⠀

It's also very easy to pull together and doesn't use any sweetened condensed milk – just good old cream, milk, and maple syrup. ⁠⠀

Listen, I'm a Type 1 + I've been called a perfectionist my entire life.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
I didn't hate it. I believed that being called a perfectionist meant people viewed my work as high-quality. They saw that I put a lot of effort, time + careful consideration into everything I do. I thought of it as a compliment.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
That's the positive side of being a perfectionist: you produce to the highest standard possible. People want to work with you because they know you'll do the best job.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
The flip side of this is that you're also NEVER happy with what you produce + constantly striving to one-up yourself and be better. You criticise everything you do. As a perfectionist, you cannot accept (or even fathom) turning in work that isn't your best.⁠⁠⠀
⁠⠀
But what does that mean? "Your best"?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
To a perfectionist, "your best" is often an impossibly high standard. So high, in fact, that it causes anxiety, stress + the all-too-frequent habit of stalling over or never finishing a project because it's not up to your standards.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Oh hi, it me! 🙋🏻‍♀️ There are partially written novels, a half-baked cookbook, + hundreds of photos sitting in my hard drive that haven't seen the light of day because, to me, they aren't my best work.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Why would I ever publish something that wasn't my best? That would be a poor reflection of me + my ability.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Truth bomb: THAT'S BULLSH*T.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Your self-worth is not defined by your ability to decorate the perfect cake, style the perfect photo, or be the perfect mom or partner.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Your work does not define you as a person. You are not your work.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
It's my dream to write a cookbook one day. It's my dream to author a YA novel. But neither of these things are going to happen if I keep focusing on perfection + let them die in a folder. I need to get messy.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Even if it's not my "best", at least the work will be done. And being done is one step closer to making your dreams happen.⁠⠀

NEW Controversial opinion: the world NEEDS another smoothie recipe. In particular, THIS Cherry Almond Breakfast Smoothie recipe. 🍒🥧⁠⠀

Okay, I know I said that my Pina Colada Smoothie was my favourite summer smoothie a few weeks back, but I’m here to tell you I was wrong. So freakin' wrong.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
This cherry almond one is now my official favourite breakfast smoothie. Bar none.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
And that’s saying a lot because I drink a heckuva lot of smoothies. 😂😅⁠⠀
⁠⠀
First of all, it tastes like DESSERT. If you love Bakewell tarts and cherries, you are going to go absolutely mad for this smoothie. Like peanuts and chocolate, almonds and cherries were just made for each other!⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Second of all, it’s extremely filling. Like, I don’t even think about food until about 1pm after eating this smoothie for breakfast, even if I’ve worked out. It’s seriously that satisfying. Protein, fat, fibre, fruit, veg, this baby has it all! 🤤⁠⠀

Over the last two years that I've been running Naturally Sweet Kitchen, I've had DMs, comments + emails from folks telling me that my recipes AREN'T sugar free.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
But I've also had messages from people thanking me for helping them create delicious desserts that ARE sugar free.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
So who is right?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Well, no one. But also everyone.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
We think of the term "sugar free" as black + white: If it has sugar, it's not sugar-free. Case closed.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
But what is your definition of sugar?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
In my view, the terms "sugar", "refined sugar free" + "sugar free" are extremely murky + everyone defines them differently.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
I label my recipes as "refined sugar free." To me, refined sugar is sugar that has gone through the carbonatation + decolorisation processes. These are the two steps in sugar refinement that I view as unsafe + I don't use these sugars in my recipes. These are white table sugar + brown sugar. (I have a post on my blog all about how sugar is made, if you want to read more.)⁠⠀
⁠⠀
But for some, "refined sugar free" isn't the right definition for my recipes. They view refined sugar as any sugar that doesn't come directly from nature.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
For them, maple syrup, coconut sugar + agave nectar aren't "natural" sugars, because they require a process to get them into a usable state. These folks are usually fine with labelling fruit sweetened treats as refined sugar free.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Then there are others who don't view anything as sugar free – even fruit sweetened desserts – and will only use alternatives like Stevia, xylitol, erythritol, or Splenda. (Which, funnily enough, are all highly processed sugar substitutes.)⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Everyone's definition is different and no one is right or wrong.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
My recipes are refined sugar free, sugar free + contain sugar. You can call them what you like + make your own choice about whether they're right for you, your diet + your lifestyle.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
But let's show each other a little more empathy + stop fighting over the definition of "sugar free".⁠⠀
⁠⠀
In my opinion, there are far bigger things to fight for. ❤️⁠⠀
